Our dear friend and longtime CLUW member Dolores “Mickey” Drakely died peacefully on June 27, 2019. Mickey was a true blue union loyalist throughout her long life. She was an active member of Waitstaff Local 301, and later 274, which is now affiliated with Unite Here. She worked at many local restaurants, hotels and arenas, and was a reliable participant at all picket lines, rallies, union meetings and functions. In fact, she wound up on strike within a week after she first joined the Union. She was well known for always being willing to help out a coworker, and for schooling young workers about the benefits of the union and inspiring them to join.
Mickey also showed up and volunteered for every CLUW function for years, always with a platter of fabulous home baked cookies in hand – her trademark. Caring for her sick husband prevented her from joining our Board, but she always kept up her membership and pitched in to help whenever she could. Mickey was kind and generous, energetic, very stylish, witty, opinionated, and union through and through. She was devoted to her family and beloved by them all. Mickey was a proud Philly girl, raised in Germantown, and always loved the hustle and energy of the City. Her husband and high school sweetheart, Harvey, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, two granddaughters, and five great grandchildren.
