  • Philadelphia Coalition of Labor Union Women

               Philadelphia CLUW Celebrating 44th Year!!

The Coalition of Labor Union Women is a national organization founded in 1974 to address the critical needs of millions of unorganized women and to make our unions more responsive to the needs of their female members, especially women of color.  CLUW identifies common problems and concerns of working women and develops action programs to address them.  Our national President is Connie Leak, United Auto Workers, and we have prestigious representatives from many unions on our national Officers Council.

CLUW does not endorse political parties or candidates, but we do take positions on, and act on, major issues and legislation which affect working women.  We support a woman’s right to choose, preservation of affirmative action, many local labor struggles, and we are a training ground and support group for women who wish to advance within their own unions.

Our large, active Philadelphia Chapter holds action events and educational forums throughout the year. We are members of US Labor Against the War, Jobs with Justice, PA Voter ID Coalition, PCAPS, Indivisible and others, and we have a seat on the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO Executive Board and Southeastern PA ALF Executive Board.  We work closely with other women’s organizations, especially NOW, Women's Medical Fund, PathwaysPA, Philadelphia United for Progress and Philadelphia Women’s March – Philly Women Rally.  In recent years, we have run a cervical cancer prevention campaign, and each year we hold a benefit for Women Against Abuse, a local domestic violence service agency staffed by UAW members. We are actively supporting women working in non-traditional jobs.

In 2018, we have marched, rallied, protested to Protect Unions, Immigrant Families Belong Together, Fair Workweek Schedules, Women’s Rights. We made a statement at Philadelphia City Council to protect Victims of Sexual Harassment/Assault, support for a Bill and Resolution to provide Sexual Harassment/Assault trainings to all Philadelphia Employees and a path for victims to safely report incidents. There is so much more to come in the second half of 2018: the Appointment of a US Supreme Court Justice; Roe v Wade is threatened to be overturned; the USA is one step closer to becoming a Right – to – Work Country with the loss of the Janus case; over 2,300 Immigrant Children have already been separated from their parents, who now have no knowledge of where their children are!

We must #ResistPersistRise and keep the pressure on elected officials!! Your Voice is Your Vote!! Election Day November 6, 2018 is our next opportunity to elect Candidates that support our values and the time to Vote Out those who do not!

In 2017, Philly CLUW took action on many campaigns with unions and women’s groups.  We lobbied against preemption by the state of Philly’s earned sick leave law and for additional paid family leave.   We supported continued funding of Planned Parenthood and protection of women’s reproductive rights.  We joined actions in support of equal pay, Black Lives Matter, the Fight for $15 and a Union, and fair public school funding.  We continued support for US Labor Against the War and many other organizations working for the progressive change we all want. Our 2017 Fundraiser for Women Against Abuse was a Panel on #MeToo, #TimesUp, Sexual Harassment/Assault.

Our biggest project, in collaboration with the Philadelphia and Delco NOW Chapters, and our new Delaware-Chester Counties CLUW Chapter, was to provide five workshops on “How to Run for Elections Board,” the critical poll workers in each precinct who are elected by neighbors every four years.  The workshops were a huge success; we plan to expand the project to train people to run for committee person slots next year, to help increase political engagement at the community level, especially among women and young people.

CLUW has joined with many of the new activist groups forming since the Presidential election working on progressive issues - health care, immigration, tax policy, military spending, and many more.  The highlight of this work so far was the historic Women’s Marches January 21. Philly CLUW members participated in Washington DC and around the country, including a large Philly contingent.  We plan to bring our feminist union perspective and activist experience to work with these new activists, as together we confront the many daunting challenges ahead.

In 2016, Philly CLUW assisted in the creation of the Neshaminy-Bucks CLUW and Delaware-Chester Counties CLUW Chapters. For contact information go to OTHER COUNTIES. This year we will work on creating a Montgomery County and Berks County CLUW Chapters. If you wish to join any of these chapters you can download the Membership Application Form - Multi-Counties (on Home Page). Make sure you circle the county chapter you wish to join.

In 2015, we celebrated Philly CLUW’s 40th Anniversary; hosted our 1st year of Radio Segments: Union Women speaking about Family and Women’s Issues on Today in Philly Labor Radio Show; we took part in rallies and marches for Fight For $15 And A Union for Fast Food Workers, Retail, Homecare Givers, Nursing Home Workers and many more. We signed petitions, wrote letters and called congress, Harrisburg and City Council about protecting workers rights, opposing Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP); Privatization of our State Liquor Stores, Postal Service, Public Schools; and we support Pay Equity, Protect Public Workers Pensions, Marriage Equality, the Wage Theft Bill, We Stand with Planned Parenthood and pass a fair Budget that brings funding back into our schools and protects workers and environment. Our chapter members have been on the front lines on many of these issues and more.

Exec. Vice President, Nicole Fuller, Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO; VP for Communications, Valerie Braman, Penn State University; VP for Membership & Recruitment, Joyce Lindorf; Recording Secretary, Suzanne Povse, UAW 1069 Retired; Treasurer, Kathy Black, AFSCME DC 47 Retired; Trustee, Evette Jones, PFT; Trustee, Michelle Jamison, AFSCME DC 47;  Trustee, Bethanne Perkowski, AFSCME Local 2186; we have 16 at-large Executive Board members representing AFGE, AFSCME, AFT, IFPTE, PFT, HPAE, Unite Here, PSEA, SEIU, TAUP and Jobs with Justice.               CLUW’s National Executive Board (NEB) meets twice a year in various cities.  A national convention is held every two years; Philly members attended our most recent convention, held in Detroit, Michigan September 6-9, 2017.
